Application Process

application process

  1. New Applications through FOCUS - New Applications are for students who are not zoned for the school they wish to apply to and are not currently enrolled at the school. All New applications go on to a lottery or waitlist depending on the timeframe the parents applied. Parents may apply to multiple schools or programs during the Open Enrollment timelines.

  2. Renewal applications are completed through FOCUS for the 2024-2025 School Year.

  3. Just Moved - This process allows students to remain at the school they are currently attending/enrolled at if they have moved out of the area.

Lottery Tiers

All new applications are placed in our lottery. This includes our ELO and EPO applications submitted in the appropriate windows for the upcoming school year. During the lottery window, applications are placed into a specific tier, and the lottery is run on the published dates. You can find the 2024-25 application windows and lottery dates under timelines.

  • Transitioning Active Duty Military

A tier for families with a parent who is transitioning active duty military.

  • Site Based Employees
A tier for employees who wish to apply for their student to attend the same school they work at.

  • Sibling Preference
A tier for families with a sibling attending the school for which their other child is applying. Both siblings have to start the next school year at the school for which the family is applying.

  • Family Preference
If a parent submits New applications for more than one student to the same school and one of those students receives a seat offer, when the parent accepts that seat offer, their other siblings will move into this tier to attempt to keep them together at the same school.

  • In County Florida Resident
A tier for Florida residents who currently live in Brevard County.

  • Out of Country Florida Resident
A tier for Florida residents who currently live out of Brevard County.

The Waitlist

All applications that are submitted after the Lottery will be placed on the waitlist for that school. To be placed on the waitlist, all application requirements must be met. Once all requirements are met, the applications are placed behind the applications already on the waitlist. After the last day for schools to offer seats on the waitlist, any remaining waitlisted seats will remain on the waitlist to potentially be offered a seat during the continual waitlist.

See below to learn about the Continual Waitlist

Starting in 2022-23 BPS has created a Continual School Choice Waitlist for parents to continue to apply to a non-zoned school or Choice school. Two (2) weeks prior to the end of the 9 week marking period, Brevard Public Schools will post the list of schools and available seats by grade level on the Parental Choice and Open Enrollment website.

All students who were on the waitlist for the 2024-25 school year will remain active and on the waitlist.

Additionally, parents who choose to complete a waitlist application for ELO or EPO may do so by completing a Focus application. All required residency documents will apply.

Every nine (9) weeks, a list of schools with capacity by grade level will be posted on the School Choice website.

Depending on the number of available seats, the Office of School Choice will contact families of students who will be offered seats prior to the end of the 9 weeks.

The District will not enroll students after the start of the fourth 9 weeks due to instructional continuity.

The cutoff date for applying to a waitlist will be March 3, 2024. No waitlist applications for the 2024-25 school year will occur after this date.

Parents will have five (5) working days to accept or reject the seat.

Parents must accept or reject the seat in this timeframe. If the seat is not accepted or rejected, the seat will be forfeited. It is the responsibility of the parent to complete this process after notification.

Once the seat is accepted, it is the parent's responsibility to enroll their student at the ELO or EPO school.

If the parent accepts the seat, they must follow all aspects of enrollment and their student must be in attendance at the ELO or EPO school on the first day of the 9 weeks. This is to keep grade reporting, curricular focus, continuity of instruction, and adequate progress for students. Parents who fail to bring their student to school on the appropriate first day of the 9 weeks will be reverted to their zoned school.

Note: Traditional timelines for Controlled Open Enrollment will remain in place and can be found on the School Choice website. This process above is for continual waitlist options. There is no guarantee there will be an opening at any given school, nor guarantee that students will be offered a seat throughout the year.
